Garlic Mustard can rapidly invade wooded habitats. Garlic Mustard is not native to our area and is choking out our native wildflowers.

How You Can Help

Come join us on April 28 at the Cascades and help pull Garlic Mustard. We will pull the plants, carefully getting the roots, and then bag them for disposal.
Bring a pair of gloves and help pull Garlic Mustard for a while, then hike to the falls. Bring friends or your organization and make a day of it, there’s lots to do.

ReNew the New Committee to initiate Carcass Collector Program. In an effort to give sportsmen a location to properly dispose of deer carcasses, the ReNew the New Committee has initiated the Carcass Collector Program. Every year hundreds of deer carcasses end up along our roadsides and the banks of the river, primarily because many people simply have nowhere to take them. To solve this problem, there has been a dumpster placed at Pembroke Stop and Save that will be accessible twenty-four hours per day, throughout the hunting season. The location was provided at no cost, by one the Renew’s volunteers and store owner, Mike Bostic.

The dumpster itself bears the programs logo designed by Alisa Moody with Wild Country Studios, also one of the committee’s volunteers. The Giles County Public Service Authority plans to empty the dumpster several times per week. While this is currently the only location the service is offered, if successful, there are plans to expand the program next year.

Sgt. Charlie Mullins, a Conservation Police Officer with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries stated that the program was designed by sportsmen, for sportsmen, and he believes it will address a growing problem. Mullins also states they plan to ask for increased fines and/or jail time for violators who are caught illegally dumping carcasses; with the extra effort the county has made there is simply no explanation for improperly disposing of these carcasses.

ReNew The New is a volunteer organization made up of Giles Conservation, Law and County officials; outfitters, and citizens committed to stewardship of the 37 miles of the New River flowing through Giles County. ReNew sponsors two annual river clean-ups and welcomes anyone interested in protecting and renewing the beautiful New River. For more informations, please call 540-921-2525.

At 7:00 pm on November 3rd, the Historic 1908 Courthouse Old Time Music Jam in Independence will be the featured Venue Showcase at Heartwood.

The traditional music of Southwest Virginia thrives in many well established jam sessions along The Crooked Road. “As part of this music series, we have arranged for these amazing gatherings to literally pick up and come do their thing at Heartwood”, says Crooked Road Executive Director Jack Hinshelwood. “The idea is to introduce these Jams to new audiences at Heartwood and give the audience members a taste of what they can experience if they go see these Jams in their home location”. The Jam Sessions to be featured include the Historic 1908 Courthouse Jam from Independence on November 3, the Smyth County Jam from Chilhowie on December 1, and the Lays Hardware Jam from Coeburn on December 29. Performers will include those who regularly attend those jams but all jam minded musicians are welcome to join in just as they are at any jam session.

In addition to Venue Showcases, the music series will feature three Youth Music Concerts. “As anyone who has attended youth competitions at events like the Galax Fiddlers Convention can attest, the level of talent among the region’s youth is astounding.” says Jonathan Romeo, Program Director for The Crooked Road’s Traditional Music Education Plan initiative. “These youth are tremendous ambassadors for the traditional music of their home communities”.

Youth groups to be featured in the music series through December 29 include the Pick Program from Buchanan County, Raisin’ Cain bluegrass band from Washington County, Honaker FFA Bluegrass Band from Russell County, Mountain Music School String Band from Big Stone Gap, the Floyd Music School, and the Albert Hash Memorial Band from Grayson County.

Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway is located off I-81 at Exit 14 in Abingdon, Virginia and features food, music and craft of Southwest Virginia.
The music series is sponsored by The Crooked Road, Heartwood, the Appalachian Regional Commission, The Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission, The Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Anywhere on the Appalachian Trail (50 miles of which is right here in Giles County!)The Appalachian Trail Conservancy will be inviting families to take a hike on the A.T. on September 24 for a family hike day.  Held on National Public Lands Day (www.publiclandsday.org) and coordinating with the Let’s Move initiative (www.letsmove.gov), we’ll focus on getting kids – and their parents and grandparents out on the Appalachian Trail, many for the first time.

The event is intended to be an easy way for families to experience the A.T.  By offering hike options from ATC’s website – including gentle, easy out-and-back and loop hike options for younger children, we hope to promote the knowledge and hiking skills our expert volunteers have while welcoming new hikers and potential volunteers.
